In this context, application management refers to how traffic streams are categorised and prioritised across the network, based on TCP port, application signature and any QoS (Quality of Service) or CoS (Class of Service) applied. Caching

Web Caching refers to a technique whereby http pages, documents and images are stored temporarily, locally on a client computer browser, or on a proxy server device in the LAN. This means that heavily frequented web pages do not need to be reloaded every time a new request is made, but can be served locally, saving bandwidth, reducing latency and saving CPU usage. A strict timeout rule needs to be applied to the cache, as many websites are dynamically populated and updated, and content may be stale. A reverse proxy cache system is where the caching devices front-end the web servers, limiting LAN or server-side requests, although this does not benefit WAN bandwidth usage.

DDoS

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are on the increase - a simple strategy, basically these are large numbers of hijacked browsers or botnets programmed to make constant repeated requests to a webserver or cluster thereof until it/they crash due to CPU or bandwidth overload. DDoS mitigation is built into many of IP Performance's solution offerings, measuring number of web requests and frequency, and blocking or dropping requests as necessary.

Traffic Shaping

Traffic shaping is a network traffic management technique whose functionality is used by Bandwidth Management Systems, Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs) and WAN Optimisation solutions. It is used to optimise or guarantee performance, improve latency, and/or increase usable bandwidth for some protocols or application streams by delaying other, less critical ones. Streams are categorised and prioritised across the network, based on TCP port, application signature and any Qos or Cos applied. WAN Optimisation

WAN Optimisation (WANop) is a technology that uses a number of techniques to streamline WAN links and increase data transfer efficiencies. The common metrics used to define these potential efficiency savings are throughput, bandwidth requirements, latency, protocol optimisation, and congestion. The techniques employed may include traffic shaping, latency control, forward proxy caching, protocol spoofing, protocol/application categorisation and prioritisation, byte caching (deduplication), and compression.
