IP Performance exhibits at UK Network Operators' Forum, (UKNOF) 17; Xangati presents virtualised management solution
IP Performance were honoured to be invited to exhibit at UKNOF 17 (the UK Network Operators' Forum) at the the University of Edinburgh School of Infomatics. As well as exhibiting, IP Performance introduced our vendor partner Xangati, who delivered a presentation to the delegates, "Bridging the gap between Virtual and Physical infrastructure management".
Xangati is the leading provider of infrastructure performance management solutions that deliver comprehensive, real-time visibility empowering superior design, optimisation and troubleshooting to accelerate virtualisation initiatives with confidence.
Xangati's Infrastructure Performance Management enables network managers and operators to:
- Assess which applications can be designed into deployments over the WAN
- Optimize capacity by tracking the top consumers of resources
- Troubleshoot faster through proactive alerting of response time issues
Other interesting and thought-provoking presentations included:
- A dissertation on TRILL ('Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links'), describing Link State protocols leveraging loop-free L2 bridging topologies in scalable and resource-efficient multipath networks
- An update on Digital Scotland from the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a progress report on the Tegola Project providing broadband wireless access and backhaul links to the Highlands and Islands, and the technical challenges imposed by tidal fading over long-distance links over tidal sea water (a topic also covered at the NextGen Broadband Access Roadshow at Heriot Watt University the next day)

- A presentation on wavelength-programmable optical transceivers (GBIC, SFP, SFP+XFP) in CDWM and DWDM optical networks
...and a frank and amusing anecdotal talk from Cliff Stanford, co-founder of Demon Internet Ltd, on his days at the original 'a tenner-a-month' subscription ISP, describing the vision behind the service offering, the issues and challenges, both technical and funding-related, and covering the launch, growth and muturation of the ISP, up until its sale to THUS PLC in 1998. This talk was given as part of UKNOF's ongoing Internet History Presentation series
The United Kingdom Network Operators’ Forum (UKNOF) acts as an open forum for operational, technical and engineering information exchange related to backbone networking technologies and practices. It's objectives include:
- To improve technical co-ordination between IP network operators within the United Kingdom
- To enhance the efficiency and stability of the UK's network infrastructure
- To allow engineers to share knowledge and best practice for network operations and security
- To create an OPEN environment with participation available to all players in the industry: large and small, established and innovative
IP Performance look forward to supporting UKNOF at future events around the country.
