BlueCat Adonis architecture

DNS Co-Hosted with an ISP

In this typical DNS configuration, the external primary server is located on the organization's premises in the DMZ. The ISP provides two secondary servers to be used for redundancy. This configuration provides a basic redundant DNS architecture. The data on the secondary servers is kept consistent with the primary server. Optionally, DHCP service can be configured on either of the internal primary or secondary servers, directly from the Adonis Management Console.

DNS Primary-Secondary Configuration

In this configuration, both the primary and secondary servers are located in the corporate network (DMZ for external, trusted network for internal). The advantage to this configuration is the fact that administration for the entire corporate DNS is in full control of the corporation itself and does not rely on any service or support from a third party. BIND views may be utilized to run internal and external DNS views for secured DNS. Customers wishing to deploy dedicated internal DNS using separate appliances may also run DHCP services as an option which is configured on dedicated internal primary and secondary appliances, directly from the Adonis Management Console.

Hidden Primary Configuration

In this configuration, the front-end, secondary servers answer all DNS queries from the outside world. The primary is hidden, which is a term used to describe a "secured" DNS configuration. Optionally, DHCP service can be configured on either of the internal primary or secondary servers, directly from the Adonis Management Console.

In this configuration, Adonis is deployed in conjunction with a Microsoft Active Directory Controller. All updates are fed directly to the Adonis primary and secondary servers. Adonis manages all appropriate zone transfers, and updates are managed using the Adonis Management console.

In this configuration, two Adonis 500 DHCP appliances are being utilized. Users located at the organization's head office lease IP addresses from the Adonis DHCP server. Remote users may also obtain IP leases from the head office location. Users with multiple locations may benefit from a dedicated DHCP appliance at branch locations, useful when networks are separated or on different subnets. All management of DHCP servers is accomplished using the Adonis Management console.
